Unveiling Innovations: Trump and Nvidia's CEO Explore DeepSeek and AI Chip Exports

US President Donald Trump and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang met at the White House on Friday to discuss DeepSeek, the Chinese AI model that has sent shockwaves through the tech industry. According to a source with knowledge of the meeting, the conversation also touched on the US government’s plans to further restrict AI chip exports. The move aims to maintain the country’s edge in advanced computing power and prevent China from gaining access to sensitive technology.

The meeting comes as concerns are mounting that China is rapidly closing the gap with the US in AI development. DeepSeek’s launch of a free AI assistant last week was a significant milestone, and its popularity has sparked fears that the US may be losing its dominance in the field. Nvidia, one of the world’s leading producers of AI chips, saw its shares plummet 17% in the wake of the news.

The Trump administration has been considering stricter controls on Nvidia’s sales of its H20 chips to China. These chips are designed to run AI software and were previously compliant with existing US curbs on exports to China. However, the administration may now be looking to impose tougher restrictions in light of DeepSeek’s emergence.

Two US lawmakers, John Moolenaar and Raja Krishnamoorthi, have called for even stricter controls on exports of NVidia’s artificial intelligence chips. Their request comes as part of a review of the US export control system ordered by President Trump.

In related news, the US Commerce Department has launched an investigation into whether DeepSeek has been using US-made chips that are not allowed to be shipped to China. This development adds to the growing scrutiny surrounding the Chinese AI model and its impact on the global tech landscape.
